About & Mission
A volunteer-run foundation honoring a fallen Green Beret through scholarships, veteran support, and community service.
His Story
Jason was born on July 25, 1984, and grew up in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, where he attended Blue Mountain High School as part of a tight-knit group of friends. After graduating in 2003, he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point.
In 2007, Jason earned his degree in Nuclear Engineering, ranking sixth in his class. He commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and branched Infantry at graduation, assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, with the 82nd Airborne Division. He completed the Army Infantry Officer Basic Course, Army Ranger School, and Army Airborne School.
From 2008 to 2009, Jason deployed to Iraq serving as a Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, and Battalion Air Operations Officer with the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his performance during that deployment.
In 2011, Jason volunteered for Special Forces training. He completed the Special Forces Qualification Course in May 2013 and was assigned as a Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha Commander with Company C, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg, NC. In April 2014, he deployed to Afghanistan leading a 12-person Special Forces team.
On June 2, 2014, Captain Jason Benjamin Jones, age 29, of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, was killed in action from wounds received during a small-arms firefight in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. A fort in Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province was named in his honor.
Jason's awards and decorations include two Bronze Star Medals, the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Airborne Badge, and multiple campaign and service medals.
He is survived by his wife, parents, and a sister.
Legacy
On April 25, 2025, the United States Military Academy at West Point established an annual award in Jason's name. The award recognizes graduating cadets who exemplify the highest qualities of humility, selfless service, loyalty, and resolve to push beyond limits.
A memorial room was also dedicated in D2 Captain Jason Jones Collaboration Room, where Jason lived during his final three cadet years. The ceremony in Van Fleet Auditorium drew Jason's family, friends, fellow soldiers, and academy personnel, with Sgt. Maj. Michael McCloskey from the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) serving as guest speaker.
Our Foundation
The Captain Jason Jones Memorial Foundation was created shortly after Jason's passing by his close high school friends. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the foundation is entirely volunteer-run and exists to honor Jason's life and legacy by supporting soldiers, veterans, and their families.
Through local and regional events, the foundation strives to strengthen patriotism, build community, and give back to those who serve.
We award $1,000 annual scholarships to graduating seniors from any high school in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, who aspire to serve the country through military service. Preference is given to students accepted to a United States Military Service Academy or who will serve through an ROTC or similar program.
In partnership with Opportunity House's Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), we provide Welcome Boxes containing essential items - hygiene products, household necessities, and other supplies - to homeless and at-risk veterans transitioning to permanent housing. We also send annual holiday care packages to deployed 3rd Group Special Forces teams worldwide and make donations to veteran-related organizations.
The foundation provides financial support to organizations benefiting families of fallen patriots and disabled veterans, ensuring that those who have given the most are never forgotten.
